Don’t share your Doxy-PEP! Addendum on Doxy Drug Interactions

Important update on Doxy-PEP: doxycycline can interact with dermatology (skin) medications like Accutane and other Vitamin A / retinoid products, causing increased pressure around the brain. This can affect vision, cause temporary blindness, and headaches. There are also current studies looking at doxycycline’s effect on gut health, as well as its interactions between antacids, iron supplements, and Pepto Bismol.

Doxycycline is a common antibiotic and doxy-PEP describes its use in prevention of certain bacterial STI infections if taken within 72 hrs of exposure.

Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance has issued an addendum to Doxy-PEP usage, written by Devan Nambiar, MSc. and reviewed by Jordan Goodridge, BHSC, MD, CCFP with some of the published reports, current findings and investigations underway.

We want to remind folks in community not to share, give out or take doxy-PEP or other medications casually at parties or sex venues, since folks may not always be aware or remember the specifics of their diet or care regimen that may interact with these drugs.
