Anal Cancer & Human Papillomavirus – Part l
April 19, 2022
Description:
The training examines the role of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and anal cancer. The session delves into HPV and the 200 related HPV viruses spread through vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Some of the HPV is low risk, some are high-risk, and HPV and anal warts. Additionally, we explore an overview of the rectum/anal cavity, rectal mucosa, and how HPV affects the cells in the anal cavity. The session explains how HPV can trigger abnormal cell changes to precancerous dysplasia and invasive cancer. Some research highlights that HIV-positive men who have sex with men are at higher risk of anal dysplasia. The study points to barriers to access screening, but anal cancer is largely preventable.
The presentation discusses some of the risk factors for HPV, the transmission of HPV, progression of anal warts, and anal cancer. Data and recommendations from the ANCHOR study provide some critical guidelines for anal screening for people living with HIV.
Participants learn of three methods of anal screening, DARE, anal pap smears, and HRA. The session discusses access to Gardasil 9 vaccine and its criteria. Lastly, most importantly, we discuss communication tips on talking with your healthcare provider on the butt and anal health. Additionally, participants explore the importance of anal health discussions in a safe space that affirm sexuality and sexual practices.
The training is a blended learning style using polls, didactic, videos, and community discussions.
