Poppers
(Amyl Nitrates, Room Odours, Leather Cleaner)
What It Is
Poppers are fast-acting inhalants sold in small, colorful bottles labeled as “room odour” or “leather cleaner.” They’re used in party n’ play (PnP) settings to boost pleasure and relax the body for sex.
How It Works
When inhaled, poppers relax blood vessels and increase blood flow. This causes a quick rush of warmth, excitement, and lowered inhibitions.
Poppers are often used to relax muscles—including the anal sphincter—and reduce pain during sex.
How It Might Feel
- Sudden wave of pleasure
- Dizziness or light-headedness
- Warm skin and flushed face
- Fast heartbeat
- Light trails or mild visual effects
The high lasts 2–5 minutes and fades quickly. Most people use small amounts, but taking too much can lower oxygen levels in the blood. Swallowing poppers is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
Using and Dosing
| Route | Onset Speed | Notes |
| Inhaled | Immediate | One puff at a time; effects peak quickly |
Safety tips:
- Don’t hold the bottle too close to your face
- Keep away from flames—poppers are flammable
- Never swallow poppers; call 911 if someone does
- Store bottles sealed and upright
Mixing with Other Drugs
| Drug Type | Interaction |
| Stimulants (e.g., cocaine) | Adds stress to the heart and raises health risks |
| Erectile meds (e.g., Viagra) | Can drop blood pressure dangerously fast |
Use with care and avoid combining with heart or blood pressure medications.
Safety and Safer Using
- Use one puff at a time and wait before redosing
- Avoid mixing with other drugs, especially stimulants or ED meds
- Keep bottles sealed and away from heat or flames
- Don’t use if you have heart or blood pressure issues
- Watch for skin irritation around the nose or mouth with frequent use
The Drug & The Law
Poppers are illegal to possess or sell in Canada. However, under the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, you can call 911 during an overdose without fear of simple possession charges. This applies even if you or others are on probation or parole.
Final Thoughts
Poppers can add excitement and ease during sex, especially in PnP settings. Use small amounts, avoid mixing, and never swallow the liquid.
Take care of yourself—and each other.
