Accessing Services

Accessing sexual health care that respects our gender can be hard. Telling doctors or nurses your gender takes courage. Even then, they may not know exactly what you need. This can make getting care tough.

Explore Your Options

You have many choices for health care:

  • Family doctor
  • Campus health clinic
  • Walk-in clinic
  • Hospitals
  • Community Health Centres
  • Family Health Teams
  • Public health or sexual health clinic
  • Anonymous STI/HIV testing site
  • Local HIV organization
  • Non-insured clinic
  • Planned Parenthood

Centre Your Needs

If you can, choose healthcare workers who understand you and make you feel at ease. It is okay to tell them what you need. For example, say if you cannot afford treatment or do not have a health card. They may help you find other ways to get care.

You Choose Your Providers

Referrals are not set in stone. If you are unhappy with your care, you have the right to look for someone else.

Take Your Time

Give yourself space to think about any advice or information before you decide what to do.

If You Need Extra Help

Queer and trans health groups can speak up for you, share resources, and support your doctor. They can help with HPV and Hep A and B vaccinations, HIV medications, and PrEP/PEP for trans people.
